What Are Cognitive Biases?

Cognitive biases are potential blin spots within our way of thinking. There are many that go into this. It’s important to become aware of these refine our way of thinking. It’s important that we structure our thinking in a way that helps us reach our goals and become the greatest versions of ourselves.

Types Of Biases

1. Confirmation bias

This is a biases to believe things that in alignment with our exiting beliefs. This has a lot of value, but sometimes we have to carefully evaluate it to make sure it’s accurate.

2. Authority bias

This relates to were more likely to believe something if it’s in alignment with an authority figure. This has value of there credible, but just because they’re an authority figure doesn’t mean that they are.

3. Anchoring bias

This relates to how were more likely to go with the first piece of information that we received. This has value when it comes to making quick decisions, but sometimes we need to evaluate the other information.

Cognitive Distortions

1. All or nothing thinking

This is about thinking something is either this or that. The reality is that it’s usually the space between that counts. This has value when it comes to making decisions, but be careful because there’s always more to it.

2. Blaming others

This is about it’s always someone else’s fault instead of self focused thinking. When you take 100% responsibility for your life, that means the power is in your hands. This is not always easy to do, but it’s possible.

3. Minimization

This is about giving more focus to the negative things instead of the positive things. When you do this, you give your power away to change. Yes, there will always be negative things, but it’s more so how you utilize it to create a better future.

Cognitive Dissonance

1. Stand for the truth

In order to avoid cognitive dissonance, you must stand for the truth. Live with honor and integrity. This will ensure that you are consistant with your thinking.

2. Be real

Train your mind to be free in the face of adversity. Being consistant in your life will help minimize this. Live in alignment with your principles and values. Everyday is a new opportunity.

3. Have a plan

You must have a plan in your life and live in the flow. What are your goals, and what do you want? Going through the day aimless will lead to inconsistency.

Implementation

In order to implement these practices, you must know what you want. You must know what you want in life. Let your values guide your decisions. Everyday is an opportunity to get better. Work on your mind, for it is the foundation of your life.
