Spartan Warrior Society- What Does It Mean To Be A Spartan, and Spartan Mindset
Who Were The Spartans?
Sparta, also known as Lacedaemon, was an ancient Greek city state located in a region of southern Greece called Laconia. All male Spartan citizens participated in warrior training called the Agoge, which emphasized obedience, endurance, courage and self-control, and lasted from 7-20 years old until they became a warrior. Everything in Sparta revolved around the act of war, which is why they were so effective. They were subjected to continual physical, competitions, which could involve violence, given rations and expected to become skilled at stealing food, among other survival skills.
What Does It Mean To Be A Spartan?
If you take a look at the root word, it’s spar, or sparing. I think of it as looking at everything as a way to get better. Life is training. Everything is an opportunity to grow and get better. Managing our responses to things, our thoughts and emotions, are state of mind. All of these things are a result of our perception and how we see things. You can change your state of mind by changing how you move and what you focus on.
Spartan Mindset
No retreat, no surrender-
If you have a goal that you know in your heart is your, you must go for it. There will always be challenges that come up, but we must persevere. Obstacles are just opportunities to find out what to do differently. Failure is feedback, don’t change the goal, adjust the approach. The only time to change your goal is if it’s no longer in alignment with you, or it’s common sense to do so. In this case it is not quitting, it’s just making an intelligent decision that will set you up for future success.
Do hard shit-
Doing hard things and putting yourself through challenging situations will make you hard. This will allow you to be more resilient against obstacles, and to take more on. For example, I recently undergone a 5 day fast. I had nothing but water and bone broth for 5 days. Why did I do this? Primarily for mental resilience, but there is also a lot of health benefits. I got a lot from it in terms of character and insight. Doing things like this on a regular basis will build character and carry over to everything else in life.
Know your why-
Knowing your why is akin to knowing your purpose. When times get hard, you can call on your why. Doing things for the people you love is a common one. One persons obedience is connected to so many peoples destines; meaning everything we do can significantly impact other people. If you don’t have a why, you will get knocked down every time. Those with a why can endure almost any how.
Give them no mercy-
Have no mercy when it comes to your dreams and goals. Be relentless in your pursuit. Have no mercy on the path to freedom. Never surrender, and always win. This has to be put in context. This has to be done with principles. I am more so talking about going after a goal in your heart that you know is yours, keep going. They don’t take days off, neither can we.
Stand for freedom-
They never can be as strong or as fast as us because they live in a reality that operates based on rules. Stand for freedom means to stand for whats real. You will not take orders from tyrants. Everything is birthed from freedom. The reality is that it can not be taken, they never gave it to us in the first place. Freedom is inherent in us, sure you can shut things down, but you can never take the true essence of freedom. We don’t play by the rules, we live by principle. Discipline equals freedom. Yes you can do whatever you want, but what are your results? If you want to be healthy, wealthy, or have great relationships; we must have the discipline to implement certain practices, habits, and mindset to get the results. They think they control us, but they misunderstand, freedom can’t be contained.
Courage is calling-
Courage is the way of the warrior. We will all have times in life where we are asked to demonstrate courage, will we answer the call? In the moments of courage is where our destiny is foraged. It is like a muscle that can be strengthened with use. We can train for courage by doing what I mentioned above by doing hard things. I stand barefoot in the snow for 10-15 minutes as a stoic practice. You do feel like a savage when your done if I may add.
Born to lead-
We all can be leaders because it is not a fixed trait, and is something that can be developed. Sure, there may be some genetic aspect, but like everything else, it’s a skill that can be learned. Leaders are made through the person we become. It’s in the moments that no one is looking that create us. We first make our habits, then our habits make us. We are what we repeatedly do. A real leader leads by example, not so much by what they say, but what they do.
Free your mind-
We must free our minds from limitation. F.E.A.R. is false evidence appearing real. We must confront all of our fears, doubts, and insecurities. Free your mind of limiting beliefs and who you think your supposed to be, and become who you really are.
Strength and honor-
This refers to your word being your bond. If you say your going to do something, it’s already done. You may not accomplish all your goals, but you always give everything you have.
Become dangerous-
Let me explain what I mean. Being dangerous is not about harming other people, but harnessing your inner power to be effective and create change in the world. We want to be a danger to the tyrants, who want to control us. This is because all we have to do is live in truth. The greatest revenge is massive success. The matrix want’s you broke, unhealthy, and unhappy. The only way out is to win from within. You can start one day, or you can make it day one. The choice is yours my friend.
