Habit Stacking- How To Start, Things To Avoid While Build Habits, and How To Upgrade Your Inner Game
What Is Habit Stacking?
This is the concept of stacking habits and leveraging neuroscience to achieve greatness. When we stack small habits on top of each other, that’s how we create momentum. It is essentially about creating positive habits based on your existing ones. The more powerful habits we have in our life, the more successful we will be.
How To Start Habit Stacking
1. Have a goals in mind
Understand what your working for. Be determined in your pursuit. Having an aim will allow you to select the right habits to build a routine. Having a goal in mind allows you to strip away everything that is not of excellence, and see clearly.
2. Habit trigger
This is the thing that allows you to build a positive habit on top of another. An example would be listening to an audiobook while your in the gym. The trigger is perhaps anytime you get in the car, you turn on an audiobook. So it’s an incentive to do the thing. A habit trigger allows you to stay on track and be consistant.
3. Watch your stats
Keep metrics in mind. Track your progress to see what is working and what isn’t. This will allow you to make progress faster. The more aware you are of where you are, the easier it will be to go where you want to go. Perhaps journaling this out will help.
Things To Avoid While Building Habits
1. Distractions
Do your best to minimize distractions. You can’t necessarily eliminate all of them, but do what you can. These consist of both inner and outer. We can’t always control the environment, but we can control what is going on inside. Distracting thoughts and emotions that are going on in our head all the time. These are unnecessary distractions. Perhaps there is a lingering issue in your life that you need to deal with.
2. Environment
Upgrading your environment is key. Turn off notifications, and things that are not of immediate importance. Doing this will allow you to focus on what matters in your life and your goals. We get so distracted by what goes on, that we end up majoring in minor things. Work environment also matters. Doing things like using natural light, opening a window, and movement breaks and help you work harder and longer.
3. Procrastination
This is the kiss of death to your dreams. It’s important to build the habit of saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Doing things with speed of execution really matters. Some things that could help are having a clear why of why your doing what your doing. Fear often leads to procrastination. Taking action leads to a peace of mind.
How To Upgrade Your Inner Game
1. Breath work
Being able to stay calm under pressure is very important. As an entrepreneur, you have to make a lot of decisions, and with a nervous system that is adept to pressure. Breath work can literally wire your nervous system to do this easier. Listening to your body for when you need deeper breaths can be beneficial. Also, having a formal practice such as box breathing can help. That is simply a 4 count in, 4 count hold, 4 count out, 4 count hold for a few minutes.
2. Cold thermogenesis
Cold therapy is know as a hormetic stressor. A hormetic stressor is something that you do in the short term that causes a bout of stress, but makes you more resilient in the long term. There are many hormetic stressors, but today I’m going to focus on cold therapy. Cold therapy is the process of using showers, ice baths, and cold plunges to train your nervous system to be more resilient to stress. This does just not relate to cold temperatures, but this will carry over in other areas of life. Doing this will help make you calm under pressure, and able to execute.
3. Have a purpose
Waking up everyday with a purpose will help keep you on track with your goals. Why are you really doing this? What is your philosophy on life? Who Are you doing this for? Keep these questions in mind as you move forward. Purpose is what wakes you up everyday with enthusiasm and direction. It gives you a foundation on how to build your life. The thing about purpose, is that it’s not always great, it will give you a lot of challenges as well. I believe the foundation of everyones purpose is growth and service, but how everyone expresses that is going to be different. Your purpose can also change overtime, but not the foundation. I used to believe that it had to be tied in with your career, but not necessarily. Perhaps now, it’s to be the best parent you can be, and maybe in a few years it will be something else.
