Ancient Philosophy- Chivalry, Stoicism, and Taoism
What Is Ancient Philosophy?
The ancients had many great philosophies, and access to ancient wisdom. Many of it is applicable today because the truth doesn’t change. Also, they didn’t have a lot of the nonsense around today, so it’s easier to see the truth. There are three types that I will go over today, my favorite being stoicism. This is because it teaches real masculinity, and how to be the greatest version of yourself in all situations.
Chivalry
This is ancient knight philosophy that originated in ancient Europe. This contained many tenets, but the main ones were how to treat women, mannerisms, and honor.
1. How to treat women
In chivalry, treating women well was one of it’s core tenets. This is because it’s really a reflection of how we relate to ourselves, and reality as a whole. It’s very important to serve and protect women. They should be cherished and appreciated. There are many things that they can do that men can’t.
2. Mannerisms
Chivalric philosophy taught how to behave well with mannerisms. Many of the principles involved dinning, and how to treat guests. Treating people with kindness and respect is very important. Of course, this all starts with how we treat ourselves, such as self talk, and self resolve. Ultimately, stay clean and ready.
3. Live with honor
Living with honor is about saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Your words really mean something, don’t just talk to talk, but actually convey a message. Also, overcome your shortcomings, and work on self improvement everyday. Know that it is your moral duty and obligation to be successful.
Stoicism
These are ancient Greek Philosophers with wide ranging view points. It originated from a philosopher named Zeno of Cypress, who lost everything after a shipwreck. He started reading about Socrates, and studied with some of the most noted Philosophers in the city. Some of the main philosophers of Stoicism that came after Zeno were Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus. They cultivated inner peace by accepting things that they can’t change, and putting their energy towards their actions.
1. Stand tall and stay free in the face of adversity
This is referring to the capabilities to handle adversity, and move through efficiently. This is important because in life we will all face adversity, the question is how will we handle it. How we handle it will determine the trajectory of our lives. We can use it to shape us, or destroy us.
2. Be the change you wish to see in the world
This is about not looking for the external to be okay, rather looking toward the internal. Confidence is built from within. Doing what you say your going to do, and staying the course. You know your why, and the people your doing this for. Never waver, and stay true to the mission.
3. Laconic Speech
The ancient Spartans were known to destroy your entire dialogue within a few words or phrases. They had many savage one liners. The point here is to have substance in what you say.
Taoism
Taoism is a philosophical system that originated in ancient China. There was many tenets of Taoism, and really worked with chi. They also had a lot of principles related to sexuality.
1. Semen retention
This is the ancient Taoist practice of not expelling your seed every chance you get. According to Taoist philosophy and modern science, ejaculating all the time depletes your energy. We know that semen can reabsorb in your body and generate tissue. There is a compound in sperm called spermidine that has been well verified to promote longevity and autophagy.
2. Build the chi
The more you build the chi through lifestyle, such as sleep, nutrition, exercise, and stress management, the more equipped you will be to live the life you desire.
3. Know thyself
The more that you know yourself through introspection, such as meditation, journaling, and empowering questions, the better off we will be. The more that you know yourself, the more you will know the world and other people. As within, so without, as above, so below.
