Chiropractic Care- History, Training, and the Value of Chiropractic
History of Chiropractic Care
Spinal manipulation actually dates back to ancient Greece, where Hippocrates focused on the spine. In the late 1800s, a healer named Daniel David Palmer performed a spinal adjustment on a patient. The patient was named Harvey Lillard, who lost is hearing in one ear after bending over and hearing a pop in is upper back. Palmer thought it was related the nerves connecting to the ears. After the adjustment, Lillard regained his hearing. Soon enough people heard the story and went to go see him too. He then opened a school to train chiropractors.
Chiropractic Training, and Why They Have a Bad Reputation
Training-
Chiropractors undergo a 4 year education. The first 2 are for learning basic sciences, they learn everything that M.D.s do except pharmacology. The last 2 years are for learning manipulation techniques, neurology, orthopedics, and rehabilitation.
Why they sometimes have a bad reputation-
The chiropractors were getting a lot of attention, and the medical system was losing many patients. In the 1960s, the AMA (American medical association) launched a campaign to discredit chiropractors. They were saying all sorts of things to make people stop believing in it. This went on for 25 years until the supreme court had enough. They found the AMA to be guilty as charged.
How Chiropractic Works
Subluxations are a misalignment of the spine do to day to day activities. Over time, this can damage the spine and the nervous system. Chiropractic adjustments realign the spine and get the nervous system back online. There are millions of neurons in the spinal cord, and influences every action in the body. If subluxations are disrupting that process, your body will not work optimally.
