Colon- What Is It, Functions, and How To Improve the Health Of Your Colon
What Is the Colon?
The colon is a very important part of the digestive system. One of it’s jobs is to pull water from the intestines in order to have a proper bowl movement. It also transfers the stool to the rectum for excretion. Lastly, it can absorb certain nutrients from the food that we eat.
How To Improve Colon Health
1. Hydrate
This will help lubricate fecal matter through the colon. If you are dehydrated, it’s going to be much harder for things to be excreted. The quality of water also matters. The municipal water supply has chlorine in it to kill bacteria, the problem is that it will also kill your beneficial bacteria that is required for a healthy colon. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces, you may need more based on activity level. Ultimately, listen to your body.
2. Exercise
Movement creates movement. Exercise is very important for having a healthy bowl movement. It activates something called peristalsis, or movement of food through the intestines. It also increases blood flow, which is another thing that increases the contractions of the intestines.
3. Propper pooping position
The standard toilet is a great invention for sanitization, but there is a problem. When we sit on the toilet, it puts a kink in the puborectalis muscle. This muscle acts as a sling, and keeps cargo inside, so we don’t randomly drop it. When if go to the bathroom, this muscle is supposed to be completely relaxed, but the standard toilet prevents this from happening by putting a kink in the muscle. This can result in constipation. Our ancestors have always been in a squatting position, as well as many people around the world now. The squatting position allows for the puborectalis muscle to completely relax. Putting ourselves in a squatting position on the toilet is optimal. All you have to do is use a stool to put your feet up. Squatty Potty is a very popular brand that does this for you.
4. Coffee enemas
Coffee enemas are an ancient remedy that have been around for thousands of years. It involves feeding coffee through the anus with a tube attached to an enema bucket. Leave it in for 15-30 minutes, and expel int0 the toilet. This is a great way to remove environmental toxins, and cleanse the liver. Make sure to use a stainless steel enema bucket and organic coffee to avoid any unnecessary toxins.
5. Colonics
This is a aggressive form of cleaning the colon, and should not be done often. It involves using very large amounts of water sometimes along with other substances to clean out the colon. This can be beneficial, but can deplete beneficial bacteria if overdone.
