What is Clutter?
Clutter can be anything physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual that you are carrying around that is no longer serving you. We are often even unaware of these things and how they may be affecting us. This article will be mainly focused on the physical.
Criteria to Decide What Goes and What Stays
In order to help declutter, ask yourself three questions: do I need it, do I love it, and do I use it? These will help determine your coarse of action. You don’t need to follow a set of one size fits all directions. You should really giver yourself permission to declutter in a way that works for you. Also, be careful about someday thinking. We often say that we may need this someday, but don’t really think it through if that’s actually true. When we let go of what we no longer need, we make room for new possibilities.
How to Mentally Let Go of Things
Sometimes it can be difficult to mentally let go of things. Sometimes we have a fantasy self that we aspire to that has no basis in reality. This means facing up to what is true for us. We have to know ourselves and ask if we randomly buy things that we have no intention of using.
5 Steps To Declutter
1. It doesn’t have to take as long as you think
Decluttering an entire room is probably too much for most people. You can take 10 minutes each day to declutter a spot if you want, and it will eventually get done.
2. Clean as you go
Develop habits of keeping the area clear. Making sure things don’t pile up will prevent you from decluttering in the first place.
3. Have a friend help
A lot of items can be personal, but having a friend can help you let go of things that your having a hard time doing so.
4. Mindful shopping
Shopping is the source of the things that you bring into your home. Asking whether or not you will truly need, love, or use it. A lot of things we buy may be for short term pleasure and may not actually desire it in the future. If your not sure, store it at the store. You can always go back and get it of your not certain.
5. Organizing
Organizing your home can help you see what you really have. Having an organized area can help you think clearly and make better decisions.
